Do I need a building permit for my accessory building?

All buildings/accessory buildings require a building permit.

The only structures exempt from this process are:

  • Any building or structure erected and used strictly for agricultural purposes, would be exempt from building permit requirements by meeting the Ag Exemption certification. An application for Ag Exemption can be obtained online or by calling our office. An Ag Exemption does not exempt the structure from mechanical, electrical or plumbing inspections (if applicable).
  • All One-story detached accessory structures used as tool sheds, playhouses and similar uses, provided the projected roof and/or floor area does not exceed 200 square feet do not require a building permit. Please note, these structures are not exempt from zoning setbacks or floodplain regulations. Please contact our office to verify that any structure meets setbacks and is not located within a floodplain prior to construction.
